We were honored this weekend with the opportunity to do life with Aly and Jacob. The soon to be Bohn Family! As a photographer I always enjoy the first few minutes of a shoot the most. This is that “feeling each other out” process. It is that point where you (or in our case) we as photographers are feeling out our clients and trying to make a fun connection and our clients are trying to figure out exactly who we are. April and I are very good at making people feel comfortable, or so we think. So normally after about 5 minutes we are best friends with our couples and are having a really great time. For Aly and Jacob…it took all of about 1 minute. From the first pose they were laughing, giggling and turning what can sometimes be an awkward first few minutes, into nothing but fun! We encourage our couples to be exactly like this. I think with photography it puts people in a different scenario in which they’re not used to. So, here are some easy lessons we can all take from Aly and Jacob in order to be ready and maximize every moment we have together.
Jacob and Aly were naturals at this. We could tell that this was something that they do not do regularly. But instead of making things feel uncommon they reverted to what they know, which was clearly how they felt about each other and how to have A LOT of fun! With every pose we directed them to do, there were moments where they were laughing, making funny faces, tickling, shoving, and just enjoying the moment. This is key to getting those candid feeling shots. Some may think this is unwanted or some how unprofessional. But it is completely the opposite. We want you to be as comfortable and relaxed as you can. Even if a we get a picture of a funny face you do to make your partner laugh. The next moments after that are where the best pictures come from!!
Our favorite pictures are ones that show joy because that is what we like bringing to our guests. But a close number two is our clients acting naturally. When our clients feel relaxed in front of the camera it produces great natural pictures. These photos are called candid shots. I like to sometimes shout out “think vogue” or “deep in thought” while trying to achieve these. Candid shots do a great job bringing out the romance, different emotions, or interpretations within a moment.
Hands down our favorite part of Aly and Jacobs shoot was there Beer Battle Shot. April and I always have a game plan for a shoot mapped out, however we always leave time for our guests if they have something specific, they want to do. We would hate to run through our own agenda and neglect a moment you want to capture. In Aly and Jacobs case, they wanted to Battle it out with Beer. Kudos to Aly for picking beer cans that matched their outfits, and props to Jacob for staying away from Heineken. Nothing was more fun on Saturday night than taking those pictures. We laughed, got some people staring, but in the end, had fun and to us, isn’t that what its all about?
Thanks Aly and Jacob for creating some memories we will not forget. Cheers!

PS. We had so much fun with Aly and Jacobs Beer Battle that was Facebook Lived that April and I have decided to put a spin on it and incorporate it into every engagement session! We are calling it the Facebook Live Surprise! Couples will be given creative options before the shoot to choose from that will make a fun/artistic style picture, that will range from conservative to edgy. Examples include: Champagne, beer battles, color bombs, rose petals, confetti, or whatever creativity they can come up with on their own. Then tell your family and friends, we will go live on Facebook while we photograph it so others can join in the fun. Get your thinking caps on! It’s going to be fun !!
