While talking about doing our own family portraits the other day, I cringed. I got a little nauseated just thinking about it to be completely honest…haha. My hubby is now shooting with me and suggested we update our website with some new and fresh photos. Here is the deal though, he wanted “us” to do them ourselves. At first, I really had no idea why. But after some convincing on his part and very thorough research on the internet I downloaded an app called Canon Camera Connect. This app is awesome. It does require wifi however, if you have a camera that has it, turn it on and BOOM!! I could now connect my iphone to my camera, press a button on the phone and take pictures with my camera while holding my iphone behind my back…WOW! I couldn’t believe it! We could now do our OWN pro selfies? So ahh-maazing!! Thank you Pinterest and tutorials online to help me get more photos with myself in them more often (the struggle is real for photographers yal)!!
Now, if you don’t have wifi on your camera it is still possible! You can simply get everyone in place, get the camera in focus (most important) set the timer and hop in the photo! The research and prep for photos went relatively smoothly, I even practiced on myself a few times at home and was amazed at the quality of the shots! Getting on the other side of the camera, now that was no joke. I can completely relate to the stress and anxiety of getting everyone ready and on time before the sun went down.
Even though in my head everything was all planned out, good to go and ready…in reality it just wasn’t that easy. See what happened was we got into our meal prep routine (we do this Sundays to make sure we eat healthier, different blog, different time) and it just got later and later. Jason and I really loved the idea of getting them done at Adriatica which was 30 minutes away. Also, the sunset time had moved up by 15 minutes, so it was no longer at 8:30pm like I had originally thought. After some running around, getting the kids dressed, redoing hair, and piling into the SUV we were off!
Once we arrived around 7:45ish it was gooo time and thankfully right at the GOLDEN HOUR!! It’s pretty much the best for all skin tones, creamy dreamy backgrounds and getting that soft beautiful light!!
We got our headshots in first because they were the most important. Next the kiddos because…well they are so cute and we love them haha. Once we got a few more headshots done it was getting a little darker so I knew I needed to setup the tripod and camera connect app. This I knew would’ve taken me probably about 5-10 minutes from start to finish to get everything setup and then us posed and in focus. Luckily…. the people next to us taking maternity photos happen to both be photographers too and had empathy for us. One of them offered to shoot our family shot with my camera. At first, I said no thank you but then quickly changed my answer. Why wouldn’t I? She snapped a couple of us and I didn’t even need to setup anything after all. We were so blessed and surprised by their generousity to jump in and help!! See ya never know what good can come out of a stressful situation!! And the end result, we now have some updated family photos and headshots to share. Thanks for reading and we hope you enjoy!!
