Texas Bluebonnets

Once every year in the great state of Texas, the blue sky’s descend onto the fields for miles and miles. This natural phenomenon brings about one of our favorite times of the year. That’s right, it means that Bluebonnets are here! Late in the spring every year these beautiful flowers blossom throughout not only Texas but some of the neighboring southern states. Whether you are a photographer or just a flower fan with a cell phone, it does not take a genius to know that they make awesome pictures! In today’s blog, I thought it would be fun to share some simple facts about Bluebonnets.

The State Flower

In 1901 the Bluebonnet was named the state flower of Texas. However, their where a few other contenders. The cotton boll was the front runner, being that Texas was widely known for its cotton. As a photographer I can say that cotton fields do make good pictures, but I prefer the colors the Bluebonnets offer. The other contender according to an article in Southern Living, was the prickly pear. Lets just say I am glad as they stuck with the Bluebonnet.

State Flower Politics

It seems not all things are easy in life and turns out their is more than one variety of Bluebonnet, one being a milder blue, the other a bit bolder. For over 70 years their was some tension as to which species was the actual state flower until a good political stance was taken and every species of Bluebonnet, including any variety that had yet to be recorded, was all lumped into one category of flower. So as it turns out, Texas has one state flower that has many different species! Lots of flowers for one big state lol!

Pretty, but Pretty Poisonous

Bluebonnets are one flower that we will probably not ever get the opportunity to photograph on a wedding cake due to the fact that they are poisonous! A little tidbit for the upcoming minis, no nibbling on the plants. They are not highly toxic but if a small amount is consumed it could cause a tummy ache. But, better safe than sorry.

Not Just Blue

Though the name suggest it, Bluebonnets come in many different colors including pink, white, red, orange, and different shades of blue. I had been wondering for the longest time what the name of the other colored flowers that looked similar were and now I know, their Bluebonnets haha.
