The Story of US: Our First Date
We LOVE stories and sometimes get asked, “Hey what is your story?” So in honor of Valentine’s day I thought I would share Our Story, well at least a snippit of our first date ;)!
It was 15 years ago…I had just broke up with my first “real” boyfriend and was super depressed. My close friend and mentor Shelly says “hey you should ask the new guy (Jason) to the Valentines banquet at church.” Jason was 18 and just moved to our tiny town in North Houston that was full of zero great men (sorry guys that is just how I felt back then).
I really wanted a date to get me out of my funk so I actually considered it. When I finally came to my senses I said, “no way! I can’t ask a dude I barely know to this silly church banquet”. Being the great friend that she was, she went ahead and called his mother to see if he’d be up for asking me?? EEEKKK how embarrassing. But I was secretly interested to see what would happen if he did after she explained it all to me.
Two days later..Wednesday night bible study wrapped up and here it comes …the awkward conversation. “Hey”, says Jason. Me: “Hi, wow your taller than I remember” I go into my turtle shell to hide. Jason says “Thanks, well hey I was thinking, would you be interested in going to the Valentines banquet with me?” I say, “sure that would be fun but let’s not get anything for each other because that would be awkward…haha!” He shakes his head in agreement, “of course I will pick you up at 7?” I giggle, “Okay that sounds great see you there!” (Inner little girl screams with excitement and embarrassment…I have a date….eeee!).
Jason walks up and I meet him halfway up the sidewalk at my friend Shelly’s apartment. He has a single red rose in his hand (how did he know that was my favorite flower?) and is wearing a SUIT with a TIE?? Here I am in a jean skirt and a pink tool shirt…um oops? “Hey!” I exclaim “Omgoodness you weren’t supposed to bring me anything, but thank you!” He says, “I know but it’s Valentines day, I had to!”
We get to our church and lo and behold we are the ONLY dating couple there (who weren’t even dating…yet). Everywhere we look there are married couples. What were we doing there and why did they say to come if you were dating? We find our friend Shelly and her husband (who hooked us up) to eat with. I LOVE mexican food soo I gobbled up my food and Jason ate nothing. “Was he nervous” I thought? After a few we realized this is going to get really awkward, really soon.
About 45 minutes into the date an elder get’s on the mic and asks all the spouses to look into each others eyes and remember when they first fell in love. Shelly whispers in my ear, “you gotta get out of here, fast…this was a mistake!” What a great first date I thought, well this is over.
We sneak out as fast as we can and laugh soo hard about how awkward that just was. And I don’t know what came over me but I quickly grabbed his arm and said “Seriously that was crazy.. lets get out of here!” He agreed and said, “hey you wanna go see a movie?” I smiled and said “sure” and there we stood looking at eachother…all awkwardness aside with the ice officially broken!
We got an early seat to the movie Two Weeks Notice and had 45 minutes or so just to chat. We gossiped about different guys who warned him not to ask me out because I would say no. I blushed and laughed and told him this was true…I was super protective of my heart and super picky. He was too he said. I thought to myself “man he is easy to talk to.” What a breath of fresh air!
We talked and talked and laughed and laughed. We thought to ourselves…wow, this is really cool…I can be myself right now….I feel at home with this person.
Needless to say after our late night trip to IHOP we shared a nice hand shake and smile. No hug, no kiss….no that was saved for a much more special time when we were ready for it. This was a sweet date, one that I will remember forever. It is how we started and since then we have not stopped thinking about how this is still really cool, we can be ourselves with each other, and we are at home in each others hearts.
This was just the beginning of OUR STORY!
Sooo I sadly cannot find my picture of our first date….I cannot remember where I put it so here is a few of us while we are dating and the one by the Christmas tree is the night of our engagement (Story to come). Enjoy!
UPDATE: I FOUND IT…The picture of our first date was lying in an old scrap book. Yayyy!!!
