A few weeks ago I posted the Story of Us: Our First date so I have decided to create a short series of how Jason and I fell in love and eventually got married. We have been together for over 15 years now and married for 14….yayyy whooo hoo, we are beating some odds here right? Although it hasn’t been all candy canes, rainbows and unicorns, I will say that I feel like I definitely married the “right” person for me. Does the “right” person even exist? In my opinion there really isn’t a perfect person for you because we are not perfect people. But I believe that two committed people who choose to love each other even when feelings fade have a serious chance at this thing called marriage.
It had been three days after our first date and the good vibes had slightly worn off. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be continuing because I sure as heck wasn’t going to be the one calling him if you know what I mean. Although I had been thinking about how great our date was I knew there had to be something more if this was going to get serious. I couldn’t help let my mind drift to the questions, was this was going to fizzle out? Or would it actually be my guy…the right “one” for me?
Even though I was waayyy to shy to call him, my best friend and roommate at the time convinces me to call. Actually she dials the number for me, if I remember correctly. She leaves him a message with me giggling in the background about how much we would loovve for him to call us back. This is starting to become a pattern you see, people trying to play match maker and get us together? I guess I needed the push and so did he because he called me back!
I remember listening to his voice mail a few times because I just loved his speaking voice. He sounded fun and kind and really easy going. Side Note: as I am sitting here finishing my second bowl of tomato soup at Panera (yes don’t judge me…it is excellent) I just realized…I don’t even think I have told him all this. Crazy!
Even though I was slightly mortified that we left a voice message for his ENTIRE FAMILY TO HEAR, I was excited to talk to him again. This was post cell phones but I think texting was definitely not as popular back then in 2003. I called him back and we talked for a little bit and went ahead and scheduled our second date.
We chose to see a Will Ferrel movie…always a risky decision…Old School. This movie was not a winner in my book but it didn’t matter. I totally digged hanging out with Jason again! We laughed and flirted but the clean kind. We still had not touched, no hand holding, no kissing, none of that! We knew this was special and we didn’t want to rush it.
Afterwards we went to Chilis (still one of our favorite restaurants). My older sister was working there as a waitress so she got a chance to check him out while she waited on us. As she did a short series of interview questions I started to realize that she actually approved of him. He was really easy to talk to and I think it was around then that I started to realize that I approved of him too. It was the beginning of a beautiful love story where soo many great memories formed.
More to come…stay tuned for more of our Love Story next week!
