Be the Change

A man walked into the restaurant carrying what appeared to be a small chicken strip tray. At least at one point it had been, all that remained now were some streaks of grease left over. As he approached my register his demeanor was not angry, but certainly unhappy. “I ordered a large strip tray and you gave me a large nugget tray.” He got straight to the point. I was taken back, even though I had not been at Chick-fil-A long, I knew that was not a nugget tray, I also knew it was not a large. “That’s not a nugget tray,” I muttered, “that’s also not a large tray, it’s a small.” The man looked back at me, surprised I was not just giving him a different tray, “so you are calling me a liar?” He said. Just then I felt a hand gently placed on my shoulder, “You ordered a large strip tray and we gave you nuggets?” my operator said with an apologetic smile. “That’s right,” Said the man. “Well I am sorry, let me get that fixed for you right away.” Later after the man had left I asked my operator, “Why did you give into that man? It was an empty tray, and clearly not a large.” He smiled again and said, “Jason, I never want to assume anything about my guests. I figure, if someone is being dishonest about food, than they are probably very hungry and I do not want anyone to leave my restaurant hungry.” That was one of many lessons I learned about serving people in my time there.

Love your neighbor

You see, Chick-fil-A has something figured out that many have not. Their purpose is not just to serve chicken. Their purpose is to serve others. Everyone has a story and we would be foolish if we tried to act like we understand. If you have not walked in someone shoes, it is impossible to fully comprehend what they are going through. Sometimes, people need more than food. Sometimes they need support, love, and loyalty. That does not mean they need you to understand, you may never understand! But that doesn’t matter. What matters is that you are there for them. Matthew 22:39 says, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. It doesn’t say, if he makes as much money as you, or if you share the same personal beliefs. It just says “love.”

Right now our world is hurting. There are so many things going on it is saddening to say the least. It is times like these that I stop and look back at my tenor at Chick-fil-A and I ask myself. “How can I serve people better? How can I love people better?” I will never know what kind of impact my operator had on that man’s life by giving him that tray. But what I do know is he blessed him. Be a blessing in someone’s life. If you want to change the world, it begins one blessing at a time. I promise, you won’t regret it.

During my training at Chick-fil-A they showed me this video. I remember when I watched it, it brought tears to my eyes. I am a softy! Regardless I wanted to encourage you to watch. It sheds light on life from the perspective we do not get to see.
