Photography Tip: Easy Ways to Build Confidence during your Engagement Session

The Secret Ice Breaker

“We are not photogenic”, “I get a little nervous in front of a camera”, and “I just feel awkward getting my photo taken”. These are just a few of the phrases that we hear from about 95% of our happy couples! Heidi Klum herself told us she hates having her photo taken! Ok, that last part is a lie, but seriously that is the perfect example of how many people tell us that, no matter how they look!

A little secret, we also do not feel comfortable in front of the camera lol! But as photographers our main goal is to bring out the best of you and then capture it with our cameras! So we had to sit down and come up with a game plan for making everyone feel more comfortable in front of the camera. Today we will talk about the first and most important step to just that!

Walking Shots

After much deliberation and planning, we both realized that the one thing all people do well is walk! Turns out most of you have been doing it since about 1 year old! So at the beginning of every photo shoot we will simply find a nice place for our happy couples to take a stroll. We will give them two very easy instructions. 1. Walk in a line without kicking your feet out. 2. Smile or laugh, look at the camera, look at each other, look off to the left, do not look up. Then, we sit back and photograph simple, real, joyful emotion!

Show Your Results

The final secret to making anyone more comfortable in front of the lens is showing them how good they look! So directly after we have had our happy couples go on their walk, we show them the results! Sounds too easy to be true? Try it yourself and watch the expressions on their faces! Seeing their eyes light up with joy and hearing things like, “is that me!?” is one of our favorite parts of every session!
