Starting it out Right!!

The saying goes, the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time! I am not sure who is eating elephants these days and if you tried I really do not think the taste would be something you would enjoy. However as far as analogies go, this is a good one. When trying to plan for a successful day it is always best to focus on each portion as it comes.

Know your priorities

One emphasis for us is making sure the things we are doing in the morning reflect the things in life we value most! April and myself have four major priorities, most to least important are as follows. God, Family, Friends and Work. I do not ever remember wishing I had spent more time on Instagram or Facebook at the end of the day! However I can list times in my life where I regret not making more memories with family.

Once the Alarm Rings

April is the first to seize the day! She is an early riser and is up normally around 530/6 am. She starts her days off with a devotion and some quiet time, normally 20-30 min. Then she will bust out the guitar and practice. Once 6:30 rolls around we will get together and take 10 min reading a devotion. Let me pause for a moment because I do want to emphasize something. These are habits we have developed, they did not come naturally. Before we started doing these things I would sleep in much later and then scroll through my phone in bed. April would wake up a bit earlier, but still lay in bed and gaze into the iPhone screen. Tens of millions of dollars are spent creating applications that keep people involved for as much time as they possibly can. We would find ourselves glued to the screen and unfortunately, that is starting our day off letting something else control our time. One key to creating habits is to focus on natural triggers. According to Forbes the 3 parts of a habit are, “the trigger, the action, and the reward (or lack of)”.  When you roll over and grab your phone, it is a natural trigger because your body wants to do what takes the least effort. So it is good to make sure that whatever habit you want to form, is easily accessible. The opposite goes for the negative habits.  April has done a great job setting up her morning successfully by putting the things she wants to do all in one room. This way when she is done with her devotion, the guitar is close by and so is the notebook so she can set her intentions for the day.

The kids are up!

This happens almost like clockwork every day at 7am. Whoever is not awake normally wakes the other. Once they have invaded our room with hugs and sometimes surprises, they love to try and scare us. We tag team getting them dressed, then make a point to fix breakfast with them, at least a couple times a week. They LOVE pancakes and Everly is a pro when it comes to stirring the mix, cracking eggs is still a learning process!

Workout and Planning

We end the morning with a workout routine, sometimes together, sometimes separate which allows for some personal time. Then April and I like to sit down and plan how the day will look. Sounds all very simple, but it really is not. The two points I want to summarize from this blog that helped us the most are knowing our priorities and creating natural triggers. This helped us plan our mornings to have victories in what we valued most. We hope something written today can be a blessing to you and thanks so much for reading!

Cheers
